Day 6: Justy & Jane

Thank you Two Writing Teachers for the opportunity to WRITE!

         During my early years of teaching I had the most amazing principal.  He was genuinely kind, caring and funny.  He would visit classrooms everyday stopping to sit next to the kids and read with them. He was like the pied-piper in the cafeteria and the recess field.  He knew parents and students by name.  While this is a noble way to be remembered.  I remember him as the person who helped me dig deep into to teaching only to leave this saying on my desk:

       "You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. But the other four balls -- family, health, friends and spirit are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered."  ~James Patterson

        At the time I didn't understand the meaning behind this valuable quote, but today I was reminded things of the heart are most important. I sat down next to my friend, who wasn't herself.  We talked and she finally shared that she had just found out that her dog has cancer and might not make the week. I wondered why she was there, but didn't ask.  Today, she was visibly upset, I could not understand why she was there.  I finally talked her into going home.  She didn't want to deal with the office.  Thankfully, that was something that I could do for her.  Just one small thing to reminder her that she might not have a tomorrow with her pup. Work, School and teaching will be right where it was left.  

          I get it, I've been known to send my sick kids to daycare just to get my classroom set up.  (Don't throw stone, I feel guilty enough).  Missing my own child's presentation, because my class couldn't do without me.  So my husband went without me. (I have obviously never forgiven myself.) So my friend, I am glad you went home!
